Big 12 discussing expansion

The Big 12 took a potentially significant step toward expansion Sunday night when ESPN reported that Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany filed a last-minute amendment in November that could prevent the conference from having a championship game as early as next season.

"We're trying to work our way through it, but I'm less certain of the outcome than I was before," Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told ESPN.com on Sunday. ”We don't think we ought to be forced into adding schools in order to have a championship game, but it could end up that way.”

If you’ve been keeping up, that’s a jarring 180 from what Bowlsby said around this time last year. Bowlsby, in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl, said his conference was happy at 10 members and gave no indication that the presiding presidents and chancellors were considering adding teams.

“10 is what we are,” Bowlsby said last December. “I think the status quo with all 10 schools committed and the grant of rights for all our media — we’re distributing the largest amount of money per school of any of the leagues right now and I don’t think any of our members wanna change that.”

The Big 12 is represented by Oklahoma in this year’s playoff, but was left out last season. Bowlsby and the Big 12 are hoping to get the current legislation deregulated, which would allow the conference to stage a championship game with 10 members.

The vote on deregulation will take place at the NCAA convention in San Antonio on January 13-16, according to ESPN. In the event that the Big 12’s efforts are unsuccessful, the conference’s hand could be forced, perhaps leading to the latest round of conference expansion.

“(Expansion) is a part of the discussion we're having, and we won't be making any decisions until after we know how it runs out," he said.

The University of Memphis obviously hopes to be on the conference’s short list if it elects to go to 12. The Tigers are in the midst of the football program’s most successful two seasons in program history, new facilities for both primary sports are on the way, and adding Memphis would give the Big 12 a presence in fertile recruiting terrain.

"We're the best fit for the Power Five, period, and my colleagues and everybody (in the industry) knows it," athletics director Tom Bowen told USA Today in September. "We've had to build it one game at a time, and finally after three years of pushing the envelope we're in the perfect position.”
