Update on Memphis and Odom

Here’s the latest on the Memphis football coaching search. Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom was in Memphis last night meeting with athletic director Tom Bowen and the University of Memphis administration.

The latest on the Memphis coaching search

The University of Memphis needs a football coach. Here’s some of what I’ve heard regarding the search.

The state of Memphis football

The regular season concluded for the University of Memphis tonight with a 63-0 win against SMU.

Thoughts on Fuente and Virginia Tech

The news came Tuesday morning via Pat Forde: Virginia Tech has its man, and that man is University of Memphis football coach Justin Fuente. Nothing has been announced.

Four thoughts on Fuente and his contract offer

One month ago, the University of Memphis made coach Justin Fuente a contract offer that, at the time, would’ve made him the highest-paid non-Power Five coach in the country, The Commercial Appeal reported Friday afternoon.

FINAL: Memphis 83, Grambling State 65

In the game that you’ve all been waiting for, the University of Memphis sent back Grambling State, 83-65. In honor of this game being broadcasted on ESPN3, here are three thoughts from the game.

FINAL: No. 8 Oklahoma 84, Tigers 78

Two games into the season, the University of Memphis faced an enormous test: Buddy Hield and No. 8 Oklahoma. The Tigers fell short by a score of 84-78. Five thoughts: 1.) The tone of this season is already so much different.

FINAL: Grizzlies 122, Thunder 114.

Well, well, well. Don’t look now, but the Memphis Grizzlies are back to .500. We were at the point in the season where we were grasping for straws, looking for evidence of improvement in 16-point losses.  Enter Mario Chalmers.

Pastner: Guard play back on track

As part of ESPN’s 24 Hours of College Hoops, No. 8 Oklahoma is playing the University of Memphis tomorrow afternoon at FedExForum. Memphis coach Josh Pastner had a press conference in advance of that game on Monday afternoon.

FINAL: Memphis 67, Southern Miss 49

The first post-game words Josh Pastner spoke this season: “I’ll make this quick so we can go watch the football game.”

FINAL: Grizzlies 101, Trailblazers 100

Thank God for Zach Randolph.  The Grizzlies defeated the Portland Trailblazers, 101-100, Friday night at FedExForum on a Zach Randolph tip-in with six-tenths of a second remaining. Z-Bo once again saved the day.

Pastner meets with local media

The University of Memphis tips off its 2015-16 season this Saturday against Southern Miss.

FINAL: Warriors 100, Grizzlies 84

The Grizzlies suffered their fifth double-digit loss of the season Wednesday in a 100-84 loss to the undefeated Warriors. It was the usual Warriors, with their usual circus shot-making, and the more-usual-than-lately Grizzlies.

Four-star guard announcing tomorrow

National Signing Day was Wednesday, and the University of Memphis was fairly quiet on that front. The Tigers did get a signature from Jimario Rivers, a 6-7 forward from Southwest Community College, but he committed two months ago.

Grizzlies trade for Chalmers

In hopes of improving their to-this-point sub-par bench play, the Grizzlies have acquired Mario Chalmers (yes, that Mario Chalmers) and James Ennis in exchange for Beno Udrih and 2014 second-round draft pick Jarnell Stokes.

Memphis will support a winner

Attendance at the Liberty Bowl has always been a hot-button issue. At the end of last year, Memphis struggled to draw 40,000, even as the Tigers were in contention for their first ever conference title.

Fuente: Kids responded well yesterday

During the rise of Memphis football, there have been a few characterizing slogans.

FINAL: Memphis 107, LeMoyne-Owen 88.

There’s not much to draw from exhibition games (unless the Division I team loses, as we all endured last year).

The guide to Memphis and the playoff

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that the University of Memphis is going to finish undefeated. That will mean they’ll have (likely) beaten Temple twice, Navy, and a ranked Houston team.

Memphis counting on Ole Miss

On ESPN’s college football show “Championship Drive,” ESPN analyst Trevor Matich reiterated what many of us already knew: In order for the University of Memphis to crack the playoff, Ole Miss has to win out.

Memphis's ranking: What they're saying

Personally, I don’t think tonight was the night to be outraged about what ranking the University of Memphis earned in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the year.

Memphis ranked 13th in first playoff rankings

The University of Memphis entered the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season at No. 13 — making history as the highest-ranked Group of Five member ever. The Tigers are one of 11 unbeaten teams in the Top 25.

Wetzel: Would be disaster if Memphis not in CFP top six

Now that the University of Memphis is 8-0, there is one burning question: Where will the Tigers come in on Tuesday when the College Football Playoff committee releases its first rankings?

Grizzlies Game Day: 10/29

If you’re trying to get to 81-1, tonight is a must win.

Don't call the Tater Tots winner unlucky

The whole universe may think Trey Greene is the unluckiest fan in the world. But he doesn’t feel that way.

Final: Cavs 106, Grizz 76

“Tough game for the home team.” — Dave Joerger “I think everybody should be really pissed off.” — Marc Gasol “I ain’t got no excuse for you, man. They came in here and flat kicked our behind.”

Grizzlies Game Day: 10/28

Another Memphis Grizzlies season is upon us. We mostly know the product by now; it’s Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and the gang (with a couple new faces) back again for another run at the NBA championship. Even if fam

The annual NBA general manager survey, put together by NBA.com’s John Schumann, was released today, and it obviously has no shortage of Memphis Grizzlies mentions.

VIDEO: Memphis beats Ole Miss

The University of Memphis beat No. 12-ranked Ole Miss, 37-24, on Saturday at the Liberty Bowl. This is the party that ensued on the field immediately afterward.

Ole Miss-Memphis prediction

We’re about forty minutes from kickoff between Ole Miss and Memphis here at the Liberty Bowl. As of this writing, I’m comfortable saying it will be a 75-25 Memphis/Ole Miss split in terms of crowd numbers.

Memphis releases motivational video

On the eve of Memphis-Ole Miss, the University of Memphis is going all-out. Memphis coach Justin Fuente released the following motivational video on his Twitter account this morning, which is sure to get you fired up if you’re on the fence.

Tunsil out vs. Tigers

In order to upset Ole Miss on Saturday, the University of Memphis will need just about every break it can get. The Tigers got one on Monday night.

Five With Fuente: 10/12

Every Monday, University of Memphis coach Justin Fuente has a media luncheon at the athletic office building. Today’s, of course, was the most populated; it’s Ole Miss week.

University of Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen has signed a two-year contract extension with the school, President M. David Rudd announced Thursday afternoon.

Kedren Johnson may need season-ending surgery

At his Monday press conference, University of Memphis coach Josh Pastner emphasized the importance of his team staying healthy. Three days later, he was in front of the same cameras talking about an injury to one of his best guards.

Have we seen the last of BattleBallz?

BattleBallz has quickly become a fan favorite at Grizzlies games. The reason is simple: Two people in a great big bubble run full speed at one another at mid-court. As someone who's participated, it's classic entertainment.

Report: Barnes attacked Knicks coach Fisher

This isn’t exactly what we had in mind when Matt Barnes signed with the Grizzlies in the offseason.

Final(ly): Grizzlies 92, Rockets 89

The Grizzlies won a preseason game tonight by the score of 92-89. The best moment came when it ended. Am I being too harsh? Forgive me if I’m a little grumpy.

Pastner: The upside for the team is there

Josh Pastner had a press conference in advance of his team’s real practice this afternoon.

Monday Morning Martin: 10/5/15

Part of what makes home Grizzlies games great is the great detail and thought that the promotions team puts into the experience.

The misguided argument against Derrick Rose

It’s a sentence that’s become synonymous with the NBA season: Derrick Rose is hurt again. This time, Rose sustained a fracture in his left orbital bone after catching an elbow in practice.

Larry Brown doesn't care

Larry Brown simply doesn’t give a damn. SMU was slapped with very stiff NCAA penalties this afternoon as a result of lack of coach control.

Memphis-Ole Miss may be ABC national game

Memphis and Ole Miss will both be favored in every game leading up to their meeting Oct. 17 in Memphis, which means that in all likelihood both teams will enter the game undefeated.

FINAL: Memphis 53, Cincinnati 46

How on earth do you encapsulate that game? I really don’t know how words can do it justice. Here’s a shot. Memphis’ 53 points against Cincinnati gives the Tigers 215 through the first four games of the season. It’s the most ever

Every Monday, University of Memphis coach Justin Fuente meets with the media. Every Monday, I’ll take five of the most interesting things he said and post them here.

Monday Morning Martin: 9/21/15

There’s going to be a theme to today’s edition of Monday Morning Martin: The joy that having a promising quarterback brings. I’m an unabashed Oakland Raiders fan, as you probably know.

FINAL: Memphis 44, Bowling Green 41

That. Happened. (What happened?!) I don’t know, exactly. Justin Fuente doesn’t, either. But the box score says Memphis beat Bowling Green, 44-41.

Pastner says he's re-examining program

Earlier this afternoon, University of Memphis coach Josh Pastner went on 92.9 FM ESPN for the first time since the transfer of Austin Nichols. That being the case, there’s obviously a lot to unpack.

So this is some perspective. The good people over at CBSSports.com rolled out a feature Wednesday called “The United States of College Basketball.”

Conley and a new max deal

Since Marc Gasol is signed up with the Grizzlies for the next five years, Grizzlies fans have moved on to worrying about Mike Conley and his pending new deal.

Babers on Memphis: "They're bigger than us"

Tigers near 2015 season

As we’re nearing the start of the 2015 season, I think it’s an appropriate time to put one final bow on last season and reflect on how we got to where we are today.

Darrell Dickey Hits the Quan

Fisher ranked No. 81 by Scout

Let’s get this out of the way on the front end: Recruiting rankings don’t really matter. Once you get outside the Top 20 or so, every prospect is essentially a crap shoot. He might be good, he might be mediocre.

For a night, Penny Hardaway was dribbling a basketball in a Tigers jersey again. For a night, D.J. Stephens was throwing down physics-defying dunks in a Tigers jersey again.

Disappointed in Grizzlies draft? Then you were always going to be

Were you disappointed in the Grizzlies' draft haul? Unless they got a godsend (Tyus Jones or Bobby Portis slipping), you were always going to be. The Memphis Grizzlies, with the 25th overall pick, selected LSU forward Jarell Martin. Then, they made a

Good news for the Coliseum.

If you’re one of those people who wanted the Mid-South Coliseum to be turned into a WWE Hall of Fame, you’re out of luck. But if you’re one of those people who wanted the Coliseum to be repurposed and saved, today was a good day.

Fuente talks Bobby McCain

Former Memphis defensive back Bobby McCain was drafted in the fifth round by the Miami Dolphins last month, capping off what was the best football season for Memphis arguably ever. McCain, an undersized-but-gutty cornerback, will compete for the nickel spot with the Dolphins.

Cameron Payne rising up boards ... again.

The hottest prospect in the 2015 NBA Draft may well be a Memphian.

Grizzlies holding more workouts

The Memphis Grizzlies workout carousel keeps spinning and spinning and spinning. The Grizzlies will hold their next batch of workouts for draft hopefuls on Thursday morning. For now, I’ll just list the participants.

Why Grizzlies fans shouldn't root for the Warriors

Let’s get this out of the way: If you’re a Memphian, you should not be rooting for the Warriors. Soul-sucking as it may feel, LeBron James and the Cavaliers should have your full support in this Finals series.  Here’s why: 1.)

Burks arrested

There was some unfortunate news this morning regarding a former University of Memphis star: Antonio Burks, who was the 2004 Conference USA Player of the Year, was arrested and jailed on  a domestic violence charge.

Breakdown: Grizzlies holding more workouts

With the NBA Draft a little over two weeks away, we’re all beginning to catch draft fever. The Grizzlies are picking 25th overall and have already held three different sets of workouts that have included the likes of Dakari Johnson (Kentucky), Chris Walker (Florida), and Pat Connaughton (Notre Dame).

There haven’t been any prospects in, however, whose names jump off the page.

Monday Morning Martin: 6/8

Because of its affinity for the local college and pro teams, Memphis has, within its own limits, earned the “Hoop City” moniker.

Gasol: For me, the reality is Memphis

Marc Gasol is a free agent. That being the case, he’s given lots of vague generalities that pass as quotes and we, as Memphians, try to read into them because that’s just what we do.

Z-Bo on Mean Tweets!

We here at 92.9 have a personal affection toward Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets” bit — considering our own Jon Roser, the majestic one, was featured in the segment before last year’s NBA Finals.

Grizz GM likes Johnson

The Grizzlies held their second set of pre-draft workouts on Wednesday morning, a cluster that included Dakari Johnson of Kentucky.

More Grizzlies workouts!

The Grizzlies are holding their third workout on Thursday that includes some interesting names. Tomorrow on the site, I’ll break their games down a bit further. For now, here are the guys coming in Thursday for a workout.

Fuente continues to be a hot coaching name

Last season was a historic one for the University of Memphis: The Tigers won 10 games, the American Athletic Conference, an epic bowl game against a traditional power, and ended the regular season ranked in the Top 25. It was a truly impressive turnaro

Monday Morning Martin: 5/25/15

MONDAY MORNING MARTIN: 5/25 If you missed it on Friday night: The University of Memphis is not, in fact, losing $2 million on its basketball program. I wrote about this on Friday night; I’ll link it here.

The skinny on the U of M athletic department financial situation

Wait … what? The University of Memphis basketball program operated at a revenue-to-expense deficit of $1.9 million last fiscal year?

Collins harboring on ill will toward Pastner, U of M

Aki Collins spent three seasons at the University of Memphis. He helped recruit the likes of Kuran Iverson, Dominic Woodson, and Trahson Burrell. He got transfers like Dez Wells and Dorian Finney-Smith on campus.

Gasol named First Team, All-NBA

The Grizzlies are no longer playing. The honors keep pouring in. One day after Tony Allen was named First Team, All-Defense, Marc Gasol became the first player in franchise history to be named to the All-NBA First team.

Tony Allen named to First-Defense team

Harlem is safe this year. Tony Allen was named Wednesday to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team — in other words, First Team All-Defense. Tony Allen is First Team, All Defense.

Like Gasol, Koufos mum on future

Marc Gasol was the talk of yesterday's media send-off session with the Memphis Grizzlies, expectedly. But there's another big man on the team that's entering the free agency frenzy (though you wouldn't know it) this summer: Kosta Koufos.

Gasol talks free agency

The Grizzlies held their season-ending media availability Monday afternoon before everyone skedaddles to their vacation destination, and the man of the hour was free agent-to-be Marc Gasol.

Stoudamire joins Memphis staff

As the Grizzlies were about to hold their season-ending send-off media session, the other basketball team in town dropped a news bombshell.

Final: Warriors 108, Grizzlies 95.

Steph Curry gathered the loose ball, took one step, and heaved it. The Grizzlies had made a late push, running on whatever fumes they had left from this postseason that has been particularly brutal on their bodies.

The details behind Conley's injury

It is easy to forget, as we watch Grizzlies guard Mike Conley continue to battle it out in this postseason, just what he’s gone through the last two weeks. We see him on the court, laud him for being tough, and that’s that.

Allen more likely than not to miss Game 5

Game 5 has officially become even tougher. Tony Allen, who was listed on Tuesday’s injury report for the first time since the regular season, will “more likely than not” miss Game 5 tonight in San Francisco.

Allen listed as questionable

We spent all day Tuesday talking about possible adjustments that would allow Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger to keep Tony Allen on the floor vs. Golden State. That might all be moot, anyway. Allen was listed on the Grizzlies’ injury report late

Final: Grizzlies 101, Warriors 84.

In his pregame media availability Monday, Steve Kerr was asked the question that loomed over the series: Have you figured out a way to limit Tony Allen’s impact?  You know, Tony Allen. The wrench in Golden State’s grand plans.

Monday Morning Martin: 5/11/15

MONDAY MORNING MARTIN   Grizzlies win Game 3 In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Grizzlies won Game 3 on Saturday night, 99-89.

Grizzlies go up 2-1 on Warriors

It is 2:15 a.m. as of this writing, and Klay Thompson is checking under his bed at the Westin for Tony Allen. Once again, despite the odds, the Memphis Grizzlies took care of the mighty Golden State Warriors, 99-89.

Good news: Conley can feel his face again!

We’ve been covering the Mike Conley face beat all week, so it feels appropriate — on this Friday — to give you one final update before Game 3.

Chiozza happy at Florida

When Billy Donovan left Florida for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder job, the question I got the most was: What does that mean for Memphian Chris Chiozza?

Green responds to Conley incident

We have an official response from Draymond Green regarding his shot on Mike Conley in Game 2. “If the same play happened again and I have to go after the ball, I’m gonna go after the ball."

Conley offers no comment on Green incident

Grizzlies guard Mike Conley has, by now, seen the tape of the shot he took from Draymond Green in the Grizzlies’ Game 2 victory against Golden State earlier this week.

Tigers looking at White

Ever on the lookout for players who can improve his roster, there may yet be another addition to the 2015 class for University of Memphis coach Josh Pastner.

Simmons: Memphis best built to beat Warriors

UT-Memphis won't play unless they agree in football

New Tennessee coach Rick Barnes was in Atlanta today for the Big Orange Caravan’s first stop and told Vols fans, according to the News-Sentinel’s Ben Frederickson, that he’d love to get Memphis back on the schedule.

Vick now a coveted prospect

A week ago, Douglass guard LaGerald Vick was committed to SMU as a member of the 2016 recruiting class. Today, he’s a free agent and hearing from schools like Kentucky and Kansas.

Conley believes he'll play Game 2

It appears we have our answer to the question that has loomed over this second round playoff series.

Udrih: Knicks not getting Gasol

More Marc Gasol/Knicks reports! This time, it’s teammate (and former Knick) Beno Udrih weighing in. “They're not going to get him. He's a laid-back guy and doesn't like drama."

McCain drafted by the Dolphins

Bobby McCain is officially off the board. The University of Memphis DB who had 11 interceptions his last two seasons was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round at No. 145 overall.

Still not much clarity on Conley's face

Mike Conley will make the trip to Oakland for Games 1 and 2, Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said Friday before practice. Will he play? Well, I guess it depends on who you ask.

Donovan leaves for OKC; what about Chiozza?

Oklahoma City made it official Thursday afternoon and hired Florida coach Billy Donovan as Scott Brooks’ replacement. Donovan spent the last 19 years with the Gators and won two national championships there.

Grizzlies win series vs. Portland, 4-1

It is hard to describe, the way the fourth quarter of Game 5 on Thursday night so totally embodied this Grizzlies team.

Russ Smith roasts poor guy

Game 5 of the Blazers-Grizzlies is tonight at FedExForum at 8:30. Russ Smith likely won’t play. But he's already won the day on social media.

Conley gets facial surgery

The Chef was right. The Chef is always right. Mike Conley received facial surgery this morning after suffering multiple fractures in his face in Game 3, the Grizzlies announced.

Afflalo, Kaman expected to play in Game 3

Blazers guard Arron Afflalo has been upgraded to probable and big man Chris Kaman to questionable, Casey Holdahl of the Trailblazers reported Friday afternoon.

Carter talks three-point shooting

When Vince Carter signed a multiple-year deal with the Grizzlies in the offseason, most folks viewed it as an upgrade over the departing Mike Miller; Carter, though a few years older, was healthier overall and a better shot-creator than Miller.

Lillard: Stealing Game 2 changes everything

All-Star Blazers guard Damian Lillard has yet to figure out the Rubik's cube that is the Grizzlies' defense. His 5-of-21 effort in Game 1 earned him a healthy lashing from the Oregonian the morning after.

Batum doesn't actually hate Spanish people

Consider the international incident squashed. Nic Batum, whose “We don’t lose to Spanish players” motivational tactic became a national story, addressed the issue for the first time Tuesday.

Several Grizzlies join 92.9 FM ESPN Monday

It was a massive day over at 92.9 FM ESPN as we  collectively celebrated the Grizzlies’ Game 1 win against the Blazers. To help us do that? Dave Joerger, Beno Udrih, and Kosta Koufos.

Afflalo doubtful for Sunday

NBA players like to say playoff series always come down to a battle of wills. Grizzlies-Blazers will come down to a battle of ills. Mike Conley and Tony Allen, who sounded optimistic about playing tomorrow during Friday’s media availability,

Conley, Allen expecting to play Sunday

The face of the Memphis Airport, hampered recently with a hamstring injury, showed up to Grizzlies practice Friday and declared that he was going to give it a go. Grizzlies guard Mike Conley, hobbled by a foot injury, wasn’t as definitive. Nor

Grizzlies/Blazers: Scenarios

So, John, how do you feel about the Grizzlies-Blazers first round series? As it relates to this series, I’m not worried about anything. Statistically, 4-5 match-ups are coin flips.

FINAL: Grizzlies 95, Pacers 83.

And so after all the scenarios, all the number-crunching, all the scoreboard-watching: Here we are. The Grizzlies beat the Indiana Pacers Thursday night, 95-83. The Pelicans, who needed a win to get into the playoffs, pulled the upset against the Spurs, 1

Missouri transfer Williams III will visit Gonzaga

Transfer Tarrant to visit Memphis, per ESPN

Alabama graduate transfer Ricky Tarrant, formerly of Tulane, will visit the University of Memphis later this month, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.  Tarrant transferred from Alabama last week amidst the coaching change.

Breaking down the Grizzlies playoff scenarios

81 games down. One to go. The grind that is the NBA’s regular season is finally coming to an end, which means that the playoffs are nigh. That’s exciting.

Kobe sticks up for Westbrook

On Sunday night, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook dropped a career-high 54 points. On 43 shots. In a loss.

Monday Morning Martin: 4/13/15

You’re busy on the weekends. Chances are, you have neither the time nor the inclination to be plugged in outside of business hours.

Martin commits to Memphis

On Tuesday, Mitchell point guard Jeremiah Martin de-committed from Louisiana Tech.

Memphis football!!!

Ahh, the college football spring game. Where one side of the ball is ahead of the other side of the ball and we have no choice but to draw conclusions about a game played between the same team.

Wall art with the Grizzlies.

When I think of Lamar and Airways, the first thing that comes to mind is art.

Nick King to visit Ole Miss, Arkansas

When Nick King announced last month he’d be transferring from the University of Memphis, there was a school of thought that he may transfer to Murray State to join his former AAU teammate, Cameron Payne.

FINAL: Grizzlies 110, Pelicans 74.

I remember those Memphis Grizzlies. Barely. In the most important game of the season Vol. 5, the Grizzlies responded in a way nobody in their right mind would’ve predicted — with their biggest win of the season. The Grizzlies bullied the Pe

Russ Smith drops some knowledge

We haven’t seen a lot of Russ Smith since he was traded to the Grizzlies earlier this season. But we know a couple things: One, he’s got an awesome Twitter handle: @Sir_Saudade. Two, he’s good on Twitter.

JW3 transferring -- not to the Big 12, SEC, or Arizona

Johnathan Williams III, the Southwind graduate who received his release from Missouri Tuesday, will not be allowed to transfer to another SEC school, a Big 12 school, or Arizona under the terms of his release, his mother said Wednesday morning.

Johnathan Williams III, the Southwind graduate who received his release from Missouri Tuesday, will not be allowed to transfer to another SEC school, a Big 12 school, or Arizona under the terms of his release, his mother said Wednesday morning.

More on Cam Payne.

So we had Murray State guard Cameron Payne on the show this morning. Payne, a little-recruited Memphian, declared his intent to enter the NBA Draft on Monday and is projected to go as high as 13th overall. It’s really a fantastic story.

Jeremiah Martin de-commits from Louisiana Tech

Know how Memphis needs a point guard for next season? The Tigers may well have one soon.

Payne going pro

Cameron Payne, the Lausanne alum and Murray State guard, announced Tuesday he’s going pro after a stellar sophomore season in which he earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors.

Monday Morning Martin: 4/6/15

You’re busy on the weekends. Chances are, you have neither the time nor the inclination to be plugged in outside of business hours.

Final: Wizards 92, Grizzlies 83.

GRIZZLIES 100, THUNDER 92 So this is what I wrote yesterday: “I’m not willing to say the Grizzlies are “back,” but I certainly feel more confident about how they’ll finish down this final stretch before the playoffs begin.

Final: Grizzlies 100, Thunder 92.

GRIZZLIES 100, THUNDER 92 The Grizzlies entered Friday night in a tight situation; seven games until the playoffs and a half-game back of the coveted No. 2 seed. Facing the Grizzlies, essentially, was a seven-game series at the end the regular season.

Tony Allen out vs. OKC; Z-Bo questionable

We just received a bit of bad news: Tony Allen, the Grizzlies' premier defender and Russell Westbrook's worst enemy, will again be out tonight vs. Oklahoma City with a strained hamstring.

UK commit has his history wrong

The McDonald's All-American Game took place yesterday. It featured lots of future great players, including Kentucky-bound Isaiah Briscoe, a consensus Top 10 recruit from New Jersey.

Dedric Lawson's gonna be OK

The McDonald’s All-American Game just went final, and Dedric Lawson — the University of Memphis’ first representative since Shaq Goodwin in 2012 — was mostly a non-factor. That’s totally OK.

The Grizzlies woke up Monday morning a half-game back of Houston, having lost the two-seed and seemingly all of their confidence after suffering through a three-game losing streak.

Windhorst: I believe the Grizzlies will stabilize

Brian Windhorst is one of the prominent NBA reporters for ESPN; he breaks news and he's all over TV these days. We had Brian on Monday morning and talked to him extensively about the Grizzlies.

Final: Warriors 107, Grizzlies 84.

A second straight game  in Memphis vs. a contender, a second straight blowout. The Warriors disposed of the Grizzlies at FedExForum, 107-84. Steph Curry had 38 points and 10 assists. Klay Thompson had 28 points. What was an opportunity to bounce back

Tigers surprised with Miami Beach Bowl rings

Last season for the University of Memphis football team was arguably the best in the history of the program. The Tigers won 10 games for the first time in the modern era, won the American Athletic Conference, and defeated traditional power, BYU.

Final: Cavs 111, Grizz 89.

So I hope that wasn’t actually an NBA Finals Preview, because that was absolutely horrible. The Cavaliers came into Memphis and made the Grizzlies look silly, 111-89.

King, Powell transferring from Memphis

And so the Nick King and Pookie Powell eras are over. King and Powell are both transferring from Memphis, the school announced Wednesday morning. Gary Parrish (CBS/92.9) and Jeff Goodman (ESPN) were the first to report the news.

Rave reviews keep pouring in on Conley

Not long ago, there was a debate about Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley. Yeah, he’s good; but is he a TOP 10 point guard?  That debate doesn’t really exist anymore.

Josh Pastner in the mix at Arizona State

Herb Sendek was fired as Arizona State basketball coach Tuesday morning, which means the Arizona State basketball job is now open. Memphis coach Josh Pastner was linked.

Memphis 10th-ranked market for NCAA Tournament

For the first time since 2009-10, the University of Memphis is not in the NCAA Tournament. As a result, I’ve wondered aloud if Memphians, as a whole, are checked out on college basketball.

A cool story turns into an unbelievable one.

When we invited Jade Rogers, a 24-year-old woman with cerebral palsy, to our studios last week, we really had no idea it would turn into this.

Final: Grizzlies 97, Blazers 86.

This was always going to be a huge weekend for the Grizzlies — two games against playoff teams in the West with a slipping grip on the 2-seed in the West. Sprinkle in the recent bad losses and chemistry questions, and it became all the more pivotal.

Durant could miss rest of the season

The threat of a fully healthy Oklahoma City team has been a league-wide terror all season long.  For the Grizzlies, it felt like: Whatever you do, avoid the fully-healthy Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.

Brown: Kentucky would make the playoffs in the East

SMU coach Larry Brown is one of the most accomplished basketball coaches on the planet, having had success in college and the NBA. But sometimes, he says really dumb things.

Building permit pulled for Memphis football's indoor facility

It turns out the University of Memphis is spending money on its athletics program, after all (even if it comes from the private sector). A building permit for the new football indoor practice facility over on South Campus was pulled on Wednesday.

Grizzlies fall to .... Pistons

In case you missed it!!!!!! The Grizzlies lost to the God awful Detroit Pistons, 105-95. The Pistons, without Greg Monroe. The Pistons, losers of 10 straight.

Conley out Tuesday against Pistons

With only so many games remaining until the playoffs start, these are the last precious regular-season nights where certain guys can recuperate and get healthy.

Final: Grizzlies 92, Nuggets 81.

Remember last week, when the Grizzlies rested the Core Four and it was part-message, part-sincere rest?

No NIT for Memphis.

Your subtleties — they strangle me … I can’t explain myself at all … A season filled with shoddy point guard play, inconsistency, lower-than-normal talent and too many double-digit losses officially ended Sunday.

Wrapping up 2014-15 Tigers' basketball.

That does it. With yesterday’s 80-75 loss to Temple in the American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals, the 2014-15 University of Memphis basketball season is over.

Picking the 2015 AAC Tournament.

So we’re now entering the best three weeks of the year: Postseason college basketball. There’s nothing quite like it in sports.

Final: Memphis 54, UConn 53.

TRAY-SAHN. It’s pronounced TRAY-SAHN. On Senior Night in Storrs, the University of Memphis — down its best player in Austin Nichols — ruined everything.

Report: Marc Gasol has already ruled out the Knicks

As we enjoy what’s been the greatest Grizzlies season ever, there’s been a small, nagging, persistent reminder every now and then that the team is operating in a window.

Final: Grizzlies 102, Rockets 100.

Bit of a late night post here, but you kids don't have school tomorrow, anyway.

Media #BattleBallz bracket is out.

Grizzlies 9/1 favorites to win NBA title

As it stands Tuesday, the Grizzlies are 42-16 — good for second in the Western Conference. That’s pretty impressive.  And though there have been a couple baffling losses along the way, the Grizzlies are getting some love from Vegas.

MRI for Nichols reveals sprain, bone bruise

When Mark Nichols told 92.9 FM ESPN Saturday night that the injury Austin Nichols, his son, suffered against Tulsa Saturday appeared to be worse than the last one, he was right.

Final: SMU 66, Memphis 57.

Thursday night was a unique opportunity for the University of Memphis. The Tigers had the eyes of Memphis on them, given the Grizzlies weren’t in action, and they were playing a Top 25 opponent at home.

Memphis really wants you in FedExForum this week.

Remember last week when Memphis gave away a few hundred tickets just before the game against reigning national champion?  Remember the response that elicited? Let me jog your memory.

Memphis honoring '84-85 team this weekend

Here’s a cool thing for your Wednesday afternoon: The University of Memphis will honor the 1984-85 Final Four team this weekend during halftime of the Tulsa game.

All-Star Grizz analysis.

With last night’s blowout at Oklahoma City, the Memphis Grizzlies are entering the All-Star break with a record of 39-14. Let’s pause and reflect on just how awesome that is, especially given how competitive and great the Western Conference is

Tony Allen joins the Chris Vernon Show.

There’s nothing quite like Tony Allen on the court. But he’s pretty good on the radio, too. The Grindfather joined the Chris Vernon Show on 92.9 FM ESPN Monday morning.

Marc Gasol: Man of the people.

Marc Gasol: Big Spain, All-Star, philanthropist. A man who looks at the big picture. For Gasol, the lone All-Star on this 38-win Grizzlies team, that big picture consisted of lots of little ones on Monday afternoon.

Final: Temple 61, Tigers 60.

There are losses — Memphis has taken more than it cares to count this season — and then there are losses like Saturday afternoon. The Tigers, after leading by as many as 16, lost on a baseline bank shot by Josh Brown, 61-60.

Tony Allen on Tony Allen.

Tony Allen unfiltered on Tony Allen is one of my favorite sports things.  There’s a terrific piece over at Bleacher Report by Jared Zwerling that you should read.

Signing Day 2015: Memphis done good.

So Signing Day 2015 has come and gone. Drew Richmond, the five-star offensive lineman from MUS, finally signed with Tennessee after denying he had sent anything to any school.

Z-Bo named Player of the Week

In the offseason, before Zach Randolph signed a new contract with the Grizzlies, he promised us one thing amidst a collection of questions about his age: He never relied on athleticism. Gravity never bothered him. His game, he said, is timeless.

Final: Grizzlies 85, Thunder 74.

When the Grizzlies announced they’d be holding a “Wrestling Night” on Jan. 31 — this night, as it were — it filled me with joy, for a number of reasons. The Grizzlies in-game promotions staff gets it.

Grizzlies throw Marc Gasol a surprise birthday party

Beyond the winning and quirkiness and their legitimate status as NBA Finals contenders, one of the coolest things about this Grizzlies team is simple enough: They all like each other. That seems obvious, right?

Final: Grizzlies 99, Nuggets 69.

Billed as the big rematch — Round II of Marc Gasol-Jusuf Nurkic — this was a first-round TKO. The Grizzlies got their revenge from a month ago and smothered the Nuggets, 99-69, Thursday night at FedExForum.

Lawson named a McDonald's All-American

It’s been a hard season for most Memphis fans. But there’s hope. Dedric Lawson, a Class of 2015 signee, was named to the McDonald’s All-American East team on Wednesday.
